The Client

John, the Street Sanitation Team Leader, oversees operations for Cavill Mall, a 5,000 sqm high-density pedestrian precinct.
This area presents a unique maintenance challenge due to constant heavy footfall and its proximity to the beach. With the local government allocating $7 Million AUD annually to public litter management, the pressure is on John’s team to maximize operational efficiency and demonstrate strict cost control while maintaining public amenity standards.
Challenges
The waste profile in this zone is complex, ranging from bulky takeaway packaging to fine sea sand.
However, Cigarette butts became the main issue. Small and fibrous, they become wedged into the gaps of the paving bricks or buried in sand. Standard rotary sweepers often failed to pick them up, forcing the team to resort to manual litter picking.
This manual process was highly inefficient. Staff had to bend down and pick debris out of cracks, one by one - a slow and labor-intensive task that drained man-hours and increased maintenance costs without offering a permanent solution.
Solution
Our product team conducted an onsite workflow analysis with John to identify the equipment failure points. We determined that raw power wasn't enough; the site required precision extraction.
